Hey JJ ..... by "cost controlled" ..... do you mean players on their entry level deals or players signed for 1-2 million ?? I know either way, they will have to clear out cap space. Only difference is with players on entry level deals, they are fairly unproven, while somebody past the entry level, does have some NHL track record and is less of a gamble slightly than player still on entry level deal. THANKS

Without divulging specifics, it seems the Hawks are trying to move higher AAV veteran contracts in order to get younger, cost-controlled NHL players in return. This may call for Chicago to include "sweeteners" (higher ranked prospects/young players) in these deals.

If you had to pick or two guys who fit this description, who are you thinking packs their bags?

Thanks JJ, next three weeks or so should be wild for the Hawks and every other team.

I hear that and all I can think about is Victor Rask. He makes $4 million for another 5 years.

Kruger. Anisimov might be one. Another guy I am not at liberty to mention. But I think there are numerous possibilities.

Hawks like him a lot. I have not heard his name mentioned specifically since last fall, though I have heard they're talking to CAR. FWIW.

He's not a LW, and I hear that is high priority. But, lots going on. Much can happen.

Some ELC guys are somewhat to completely proven. I think it's any guy making appreciably less than the player dealt who they know can come in and help right now.

It's the ghost of Sergei Krivokrasov, isn't it?

I think this is the first summer in a while where hockey trades will be just as important as cap trades. It's really hard to determine what action (if any will be taken).

Drouin would certainly be a nice add, although doing business with Stevie Y scares me a big, he's one sharp mind.

If Hawks are adding "prospects" as sweeteners, are they stocking up on low-round draft picks coming back for when they are in rebuild mode in 3 years? Doesn't seem like it would be out of line to ask for these.

Yup, he is no dummy that's for sure. Drouin brings top 6 potential and that'll help. Hopefully, Scotty Bowman has an "inside track" to Yzerman's ear.

JJ - any word on if they're talking to PHI?

They have a gluten of forwards that are close to fitting that description:

Cousins, Raffl, Konecny, Weal, Laughton

Hammer comes to mind. and outside of Keith, probably the other defenseman with a hefty contract that could garner the best return. if there is a possibility of a AA + Hammer + Motte/Louis/Knott or draft pick to Carolina for, say, Rask and Pesce, I would be all over that.

With the potential of trading bigger salaries away .Is it for the purpose of going after the cup or the start of a rebuild?

What are the odds of a couple of these trades happening over Draft Weekend? I'm assuming we'd know about Krugs/TVR with the Expansion Draft prior.

I just don't see how Stan is gonna be able to pull this off, -actually getting better while cleaning up the salary structure. I hope he has some tricks up his sleeve though.

Took him a couple of years but he did it between 2010 and 2013.

How much has Tortorella changed? Enough so that Jackets have inquired about Kovalchuk's interest in coming to Columbus, Post has learned.

Maybe the hawks need a taller GM with longer sleeves...
